What links trend-setting modern artists and the gentrified art form of the opera? What links can be traced between sub-cultures and official art? What modern-day creative space functions like the opera houses of the 18th century? Perhaps clubs, parties or the underground scene? In the 18th century, the audience would enter the opera house at around 6pm and re-emerge only at around midnight. People ate, played cards, watched ballets and listened to operas. In the 19th century, with the gentrification of the opera, cabarets became the places where cultures of pleasure, music and the avant-garde could mix.
